Kiwi Coach Takes Up Top Job
The New Zealand Rugby League should consider Wayne Bennett as their next head coach after the departure of Michael Maguire. Maguire had to choose between the Kiwis and the New South Wales State of Origin side, prompting the decision by the NZRL to find a new coach.
Bennett has a strong record and has previously acted as an assistant to the Kiwis’ coaching staff, helping them secure a World Cup win in 2008. Bennett could be a viable candidate for the Kiwis’ top job after 2024, following the end of his coaching stint with the Dolphins.
With mid-season Tests now canceled, the Kiwis will not return to playing until after the 2024 NRL season. Bennett’s experience and dynamics as a coach could greatly benefit the Kiwis’ squad. However, if the Kiwis choose not to pursue Bennett, they are left with a limited selection of in-country coaching options.
