In 2022, I expressed my opinion that the worst decision Rugby Australia could make for the Wallabies in 2023 would be to hire Eddie Jones as their head coach. I suggested that his coaching style could lead to pet projects overshadowing actual methodology, assistants leaving, and players either being vaccinated from selection or immune from being dropped. Furthermore, I mentioned that Jones had a grumpy relationship with the media, a tendency to make excuses for losses, and a habit of showing favoritism in player selection. I also highlighted the need for a head coach who could build a team around themselves, strategize well with referees, and develop a strong set of tight forwards.
I argued that Rugby Australia should avoid hiring Jones and instead focus on a coach who could cultivate a cohesive team, manage the media effectively, and build deep, high-quality packs of players. I also suggested that the new head coach should be able to make hard decisions, embrace criticism, and improve player performance.
I emphasized that the new coach should be able to navigate the cultural divide in Australia and consider international coaching candidates. I highlighted potential Australian candidates including Dan McKellar and Laurie Fisher. I also suggested Wayne Smith as a potential Director of Rugby and Mike Catt as an attack director.
I pointed out that hiring a coaching team with diverse expertise and strong leadership would be crucial for the Wallabies’ success in the long term. Overall, I advised Rugby Australia to be brave in their selection process and focus on finding a coach who could build a strong, cohesive team.
