2023 was a year of mixed emotions for the Australian rugby league community, as we lost some of the game’s most beloved players. Let’s take a moment to remember and honor those who are no longer with us.
Billy Bischoff Jr was a talented player for the Balmain Tigers in the 1950s and 60s. He had an impressive career, playing 151 games for the Tigers and representing NSW and City. He passed away in June 2023 at the age of 85.
Bobby Bugden was a skilled halfback who played for St George and Parramatta, winning six Premierships with St George. He also represented Australia on the Kangaroo tour and in the World Cup. Bugden passed away in November 2023 at the age of 87.
Kevin Considine was a prominent player for Newtown in the 1950s and later played for Parramatta. He scored 55 tries and was known for his speed and versatility. Considine passed away in June 2023 at the age of 93.
Troy Dargan was a young player trying to establish himself in the NRL, having played for multiple teams before joining Canberra. He also represented the Cook Islands. Dargan passed away in December 2023 at the age of 26.
John Hayes was a rugged forward who played for Western Suburbs in the 1960s. He was known for his toughness and versatility, representing NSW on three occasions. Hayes passed away in September 2023 at the age of 84.
Matthew Johnston was a hard-working back rower who played 162 games for the Eels. He remained involved with the club until his passing and was an Eels life member. Johnston passed away in July 2023 at the age of 87.
Mark Lyons was a rugged forward who played for Penrith and South Sydney before retiring. He passed away in May 2023 at the age of 52.
John Sattler was one of the greatest players to ever play for South Sydney. He was known for his toughness and leadership, captaining both NSW, Queensland, and Australia in his career. Sattler passed away in March 2023 at the age of 80.
Jack Lumsden was a speedy winger who played for Manly and represented Australia against New Zealand. Lumsden passed away in March 2023 at the age of 93.
John McDonald was a legendary player, coach, and administrator. He played for QLD and Manly and went on to coach QLD in the pre-Origin era. McDonald passed away in September 2023.
Carl Webb was a fearsome player for the Broncos, Cowboys, and Eels. He represented Queensland in State of Origin and played for the Kangaroos. Webb passed away in December 2023 at the age of 42.
