Descriptions of the late John Hipwell are often about how he was the quintessential rugby union halfback. He was known for his tenacity and speed, offering strong defense and acting as an extra loose forward. Hipwell’s stocky build, slick long pass, and brilliant sidestep were also praised. Moreover, Hipwell’s bravery was demonstrated when he played on after losing his front teeth in the match for New South Wales Country versus the British Lions in 1966. According to fellow players, his strengths, such as his tenacity, defense, speed, and skill, were well respected. Hipwell first played for the Wallabies in 1968 and went on to make 36 appearances for Australia over 15 years. In 1982, he was appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia and in 2006 entered the Australian Rugby Union Hall of Fame.
